http://www.synergy-athletics.com/freebonus - Every athlete needs a proper workout and exercise routine. A great home workout piece of equipment is the sledge hammer. Most lifters don't understand that the sledge hammer can be used for multiple exercises. Here are the top three movements:

1. Finger walking - Benefits: Improved hand and finger strength. Improved dexterity and easy to implement in your regular workout routine.

2. Sledge Casting - or sledge hammer swings. This exercise will improve shoulder mobility, lat strength, grip stability.

3. Sledge Hammer Swings - great for core strength, shoulder mobility, grip strength via the vibrations, and dynamic / explosive strength.

Get your sledge hammer training in for a great workout! These work especially well for football workouts, boxing workouts, mma training, and even baseball workouts.

  • What is the ideal weight of the sledgehammer to start with ...10/14 lbs? Please advise.

  • @ThePainterr Id start with a 10. Swinging is about speed so weight isn't as important (rate of force development), and you can slide a 5 lb plate over the hammer to do the finger walking with more weight if needed. Good luck, thanks for checking out the video.

  • This is the the first this is the only video I have seen that demostrates behind the back swings with a sledge. An excerise that is great for rotator cuff mucsles. Well done.

  • @Fresprt Thanks! as you know, with a light sledge, the rotator cuff can be strengthened by both the range of motion and absorbing the vibration from the impact.

I appreciate the comment! - Joe

  • I use a 12lb hammer with a steel handle (Pop busted out 2 handles and welded a length of pipe to the head) and an old tractor trailer tire....beat the hell out of the tire for 7 rounds last night and now my arms feel like their carved out of oak.
