Evolution of morphology and behavior of complex creatures in virtual environments by genetic algorithm. The goal is how the evolution of creatures face with different situations from crawling and walking to more complex activities like climbing and skating. Our creatures use solid 3D blocks and graphtals like Karl Sims's creatures and a new type of controller based on classifier system.

  • What controls the color of the creatures different parts, or is it random. Also how did you end up with so many different creatures. Usually GAs favor one 'superior' solution and the rest are discarded. Oh and at 0:21 it seems you evolved a narwhal. =)

  • The colors are encoded in the genome but it is random at the beginning of the evolution. Iterative module have the color...

For the diversity of results in fact there is many different evolutions, almost one complete evolution for each creatures you see in the video.

  • Can you show the actual evolution process taking place? Because for all we know you just created that using a few formulas and it didn't actually "evolve" itself due to variables in the simulation that would cause some of them to live and the ones not fit to die. Evolution sort of requires more than one organism and a bunch of random mutations to occur. I don't see that in this video.

  • In fact, in these video you see only the result... During the evolution process, I use a population of creature, I test them one by one in the simulation. To get a new population, I apply mutation on the creatures. If you want more details, the best is to read our research articles on my homepage.

  • wow, this is great, i also want to learn about these, can u tell me pls how hard is to create such genetic algorithm, to simulate such virtual evolution?

    r u a professional ?

  • It is not very easy to get good result.

It was a research project during my phd.

  • OMG, the last one has found out how to jump over the obstacle, the human being is in danger!!!

  • very interesting, i study informatic and i hope play with artificial creature one day.

    Nice nice

  • Do you have suggestions for doing evolution sims on Mac? The software I've researched so far is Windows-only.

  • You can't compare real life creatures with their complexities with these moving boxes. That doesn't seem fair.

  • So who does the selection work? Do the ones which go further pass down information to the next generation mixed in with a little bit of mutation?

  • QWOP anyone? :-D

  • But can you simulate environment as well? Mix it all together can you designate certain food objects.

  • the last was called under the creatures "The He Man Creature"

  • @nlassabe These simulations look like the best kind of inspiration for sci fi producers to portray truly alien life.

  • can sbd please give me the downloading link with no log-in shits, who is free and if it can be, full version? :)

  • but is it art?
