ST. GEORGE AND THE DRAGON

At-the-table traditional greek song from Sinassos, in Cappadocia, nowdays in Turkey.

St. George's song was sung the day the saint was celebrated and there was no dancing involved.
The subject of the song refers to a dragon that blocks the water supplies in a particular area, demanding to devour a princess, in order to unblock them. St. George kills the dragon and thus releases both the princess and the water supplies.

On 1924 the greek inhabitants of Cappadocia, were re settled in Greece according to the Treaty of Lausanne, bringing along with them their costumes and traditions.

Τι λες παιδάκι μου; Ο τάφος του υπάρχει ως τις μέρες μας στη Λύδα της Παλαιστίνης και τα λείψανά του σε μοναστήρια κι Εκκλησίες. Ο Άγιος Γεώργιος ήταν γιος του Γεροντίου και της Πολυχρονίας, γεννήθηκε γύρω στο 280μ.Χ. και μαρτύρησε στη Νικομήδεια στις 23 Απριλίου του 303. Το μαρτύριό του έγινε η αιτία της μεταστροφής της Αυγούστας Αλεξάνδρας (συζ. του Διοκλητιανού) και του ιερέα των ειδώλων Αθανασίου (και όχι μόνο), οι οποίοι και τον ακολούθησαν στο μαρτύριο.
