Artist blacksmith Doug Thompson (Hell 'N' Back Welding and Bête Noire Forge) heating the one of a kind steel skull sculpture he made to red hot, then quenching and patinizing in heavyweight used motor oil.
The skull sculpture is not cast but hollow and made from plate using blacksmithing techniques, and was largely shaped a hammer and a block of wood. (The name of the sculpture is "At What Cost" and it was purchased by a private buyer at auction in the Calgary Stampede Metal Art Showcase.)
