Bit banger is my most constrained and minimalistic
microcontroller-based demo yet. It won the Oldschool 4k compo at Revision 2011.

The video camera gets really confused trying to adjust to the lighting conditions. It looks cool towards the end, though. =)

  • Why won't most monitors accept the signal? Does it interpret it as a broken signal and just scrub it?

  • @gir489 Apparently, the sync signals (vertical and/or horizontal) sometimes go out of sync. Apart from synchronising the communication, these signals are used by the monitor to determine what mode (frequency and resolution) to use. If the sync signals are noisy, presumably the monitor gets confused about what mode to use, and switches back and forth. Since switching modes is typically a slow process, the monitor never has enough time to leave the confused state.

  • do you have an MP3?

  • @pappimarx Yep, now there's an MP3 of the soundtrack. Just follow the link ("technical writeup") in the description.

  • did you program the thing to do those scenes, or are they music triggered

  • @BogdanStanciuMusic Yes and yes. =) The graphics are generated by a program running on the chip, but the program is using data from the music routine when calculating the graphics.

  • I really like your projects. Does this NEED a monitor or is it additional (meaning can I play music with no monitor?)

  • damn awesome music!!

  • This is a suggestion for your next chipophone song; Cavestory - Main theme, or Cavestory - moon(outer wall)

Everyone thumbs this up so he will see and make into a song!

  • reminds me of atari

  • Incredible. You continue to amaze me. :)

  • Just use mp3ify to rip the audio. Trim the first couple seconds of dead silence .

    Ontopic: great job!
