National - Kurdistan's presidency condemns Kirkuk bombing
ARBIL, (VOI) - The Iraq's Kurdistan's presidency condemned the suicide bombing that targeted a crowd of demonstrators earlier on Monday which left scores of civilians killed or injured and demanded to open an investigation into it.
"We condemn this terrorist act and demand the concerned institutions in the city open an investigation to unveil those who stand behind the attack," according to a statement released from the presidency and received by Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).
"We want to assure everyone that such terrorist acts will not deter Kurds from demanding the implementation of article 140 of the constitution," it added.
A total of 22 persons were killed and 150 others were wounded when a suicide bomber blew himself up among a crowd of demonstrators in downtown Kirkuk.
More than five thousand people took to the streets in Kirkuk, condemning the passage of the provincial council elections law, which includes an article postponing the city's elections.
On Tuesday, the Iraqi Parliament, with the approval of 127 deputies out of 140 who attended the session, passed the law on provincial council elections.
On Wednesday, the Presidential Board, with the unanimity of President Jalal Talabani and his two deputies Adel Abdelmahdi and Tareq al-Hashimi, rejected the law in a rapid reaction one day after the Iraqi Parliament passed it during a session that raised hue and cry over its constitutionality.
Kirkuk, an oil-rich and mixed city of Kurds, Turkmen, Christians, and Arabs; lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
