The eleventh century abbey church at Conques is set in a steep sided valley in the mountainous region of southern France. It is the major station on the so called Via Podensis route Santiago de Compostela. The abbey still holds the gold statuette encrusted with precious gems which monks created in the ninth century to hold the relics of Sainte Foy, a young Christian girl martyred during the Roman persecutions of the early fourth century. The relics were so famous for their miracles that people came from all over Europe.
Thank you so much for posting this. After reading "Little Saint" the marvelous book of Conques and Saint Foy, I was wondering what the cathedral looked like. So beautiful, so poignant.
