Number 68 Project - Sweet and Soulful: Vibrant colours and Ilana Lorraine, May 23
Two words seemed fairly apt when describing Ilana Lorraine as an artist, both sweet and soulful and such was the brief I gave to Wyatt. While her lyrics are filled with positive cues to embrace the big and the small, the harmony of her upbringing, jazz, reggae, and Jewishness evoke some serious soul, so when I asked Wyatt to plan his menu, I was forced to say two things - 'think incredibly sweet and powerfully soulful'.
The translation for Wyatt was a seasonal, fresh, menu declaring that "spring has finally arrived", and by the look at the temperature outside, he might consider a career change. It included flavours of elderflower and strawberry and drew from images of Ilana sitting around a massive family meal, and travels to Israel - using figs and honey to perfectly enhance the flavours of quail. He said when he listened to her music he was inspired by a woman brewing with richness in her life. Wyatt gravitated towards these rich components - truffle butter and foie gras and then adorning plates with edible violet petals. Dawid Koegelenberg chose overtly floral wines with names like Alice and Belinda made from women winemakers. Mission - develop a menu around Ilana - sweet, soulful and endorsed by her fans - Mission Accomplished!
