Forgive my crappy playing. This is a comparison of four different versions of Virtua Racing on the Sega Genesis, Sega 32X, Sega Saturn, and the PS2 via Sega Classics Collection.

The PS2 version via the Classics Collections obviously looks the best out of all versions. It's kind of a no contest there, but I decided to throw it just because it was another version of the game, and was one of the few good remakes on the Classic's Collection which was a hit or miss collection (VR remake hit, Golden Axe remake was a huge miss). The PS2 version controls the best out of all versions (and I'm talking with the D-pad), but has some annoying tire screeching noises.

The Sega Genesis version is the weakest version, but again, that shouldn't come as any surprise. It only has three maps, but considering that it was a fully polygonal game running on the Genesis it's a really good port. Not only does it run great, it plays great too. Like the FX Chip on the Snes, Sega created their own proprietary chip that went inside the game cartridge itself and created polygons on the Genesis. As you may imagine, proprietary hardware was costly, and that cost was carried on to the consumer with VR on the Genesis being one of the most expensive games of all time at $99 (and this was back in 1994). Granted, all the special edition games as of late have surpassed that price, but this was for the game only.

The 32X version is the version that most fans give credit for being the best home port of the game, and after playing it I can understand why they feel that way. It plays great, it controls great, and has two new tracks as well. If your one of the five other people aside from me who still owns a 32X this is a no-brainer buy.

The Saturn Version is also a really good version of the game. It adds a Grand-Prix mode which adds new tracks and vehicles. It looks the best out of the early versions as well (which should be expected). From a replay value standpoint, this would be the version with the most stuff, and would have the best replay value. The only hitch with the Saturn version that people may have is the fact that it's on a system that has it competing with games like Daytona USA, and Sega Rally. VR looks ancient by comparison, but is still a solid racer.

NOTE: I edited out the load times in the Saturn version for this vid

  • Fuck yeah... That's what I call Blast Processing.

  • @SuperGilberto1977 It's amateur night at the troll club.

  • @MrCumstein what the fuk is a rom

  • @SuperGilberto1977 I'll assume you really don't know, and aren't being sarcastic. :-D

A ROM is essentially a copy of the data contained in a read-only-memory chip. Those chips are what is inside a game cartridge.

This may not be a detailed definition of what a ROM is, but it's the best I can tell you.

    :-D

  • Bloody good looking game for the Genesis/Mega Drive back then, fantastic port of a arcade title.

Ps2 version was good but that was out many years later, So to me it don't count. Honest I was never a big fan of VR.. Big fan of Sega I am.

  • @MigueTK what is a rom?

  • @anusdicktroll1 i keep an old CRT TV in my room for just that occasion =)

  • @SuperGilberto1977 is there a rom hack to make it use the 32X soundboard? and what it would've sounded like? thanks for the info!

  • PS2 feels and sounds the most arcade like apart from the engine sound.

32X was the best port at the time super seeded by the Retro-port PS2 version.

Genesis was really good for a 16bit console game!!!

Never played the Saturn version but heard Time Warner did a crap job with the feel of the controls. Engine sounds crap too!

Played this in the arcades and the ending screen is different - Man (i.e. you!) standing on a podium.

  • @therock238360 The number of bits on its own doesn't really mean much. It was more a marketing ploy during the '90s than anything else. Have you noticed how no one cares about the number of bits in modern CPUs and GPUs?
