As with some of the other early videos of mine, this previously posted video has been upgraded to take advantage both of the much improved quality (HD) available on Youtube, and also my much improved transcription skills!
When I started to post these instructional videos, my idea was to provide assistance to other jazz players to 'de-code' some of the ideas in the song - the thinking behind a short melodic phrase perhaps, or the logic behind a reharmonised passage. Along with the audio, the view of the keyboard, the chord symbols, the view of my hands on the piano, and the annotations I added, the rough transcription would help to communicate what I had in mind as I played.
However, I have found that quite a few people like to play a fully transcribed piece. As you can guess, the transcriptions of these are done after an improvised playing of the song was done. This means that the notation has to be simplified so that it becomes playable by others. Especially on freely played passages, this can be difficult.
I use a computer to produce a rough transcription, but this needs to be heavily edited/adjusted to create the finished transcription. While not perfect, the result I hope, (especially if played after hearing the original) is quite acceptable.
This video - in HD and stereo can be downloaded free at http://www.bushgrafts.com . The printable transcription is on my DVD - $25 for about 9 hours of instructional video and over 120 printable transcriptions. Details are at http://www.bushgrafts.com/jazz/DVDbuy.htm
One of the best video-collections on the tube... fantastic stuff.
