The producer of the upcoming BBC drama, Young Herriot, talks about the show. The book to accompany the TV drama is out now.

Young Herriot tells the fascinating story of James Herriot's formative years at veterinary college. Set in Glasgow in the 1930s - pre-antibiotics, when veterinary practise was, as Herriot wrote, 'more art than science' - the book shines a light on his calling to work with animals (which began when he read an article in Meccano Magazine entitled 'Veterinary Surgery as a Career'), his early friendships and quest for knowledge at Glasgow's Veterinary College and the early development of his legendary compassion for animals.

Accompanying a major BBC drama series, Young Herriot uses previously unpublished diaries and casebooks from Herriot's days as a student to bring to life a fascinating time and place, and represents a thrilling new addition to the James Herriot canon.

  • wish they'd make a longer series! this was only 3 episodes! :'(

  • While I agree more time should have been spent on young James actually treating animals and learning by his mistakes, rather than the largely unimportant and obnoxious toff "mate", I do think there is plenty of scope to develop this into a proper series?

I hope they do some more, maybe six episodes in a series to allow more character development because I must admit this portrayal of Herriot made him look too much the interfering schoolboy?

  • Very disapointing series.

I had a hard time watching the mini series.

Iian de Caestecker looks like a young Kenneth More, but behaves almost like Norman Wisdom.

The scenes with animals in it were very poorly done.

I really do hope that we've seen the last of this.

Better to watch the classic series for the umptiest time than to waste time on this .

I'm sorry if I'm sounding harsh, but I really think this is a let down.

  • THROWN UP WATCHING LOLLLLLLLLL
