(Rob) I am Robert Pertusati, Associate Dean of Admissions at Stony Brook University. One of the great things about a campus like Stony Brook being a research university is that we provide the resources and the wealth of an academic institution, but we deliver that in small communities. Our undergraduate colleges provide a small school experience within the depth and range of a large public institution.
(Rob student) The thing that actually drew me to Stony Brook is that there are really good connections with Brookhaven National Lab and Cold Spring Harbor, which I didn't think I could have anywhere else. And I have been working at Brookhaven as well as on campus here. And to have that connection for such a low price is pretty appealing.
(Mary) One of the great capacities that we have in this new space is to allow undergraduates to step into our labs and do actual research. In fact, in my own lab I have had eight undergraduates participate enough in research that they are authors of reviewed papers.
(Nancy) Besides research opportunities, we also have internship style opportunities for people who are interested in more clinical areas of psychology or developmental areas.
(David) So we have undergraduate students a part of our research supported themes to help us understands some of the issues that students have with understanding mathematics in the university level and the pre-college level.
(Nicole) I came to Stony Brook as a transfer student and I just thought that it was a really good education. It was a great value. And I saw a lot of opportunities here since it was big university but also was able to get a lot of attention in the academic departments that I was involved in.
(Marcy) We impress upon the students that these tools that they have here in the newsroom the fancy computers, the fancy cameras, the fancy lighting equipment, everything that they have access to are just tools to help them on their journey to be a journalist. The real reason we are here is to make journalists, it is to teach journalists how to find stories, how to report stories. And they use the tools that we have brought here as a means to that ends. Not as an end in itself.
(Thomas) Stony Brook University is a research university, and within that research university, the department of physics and astronomy is renowned not only in the US, but also around the world. We provide research opportunities not only to graduate students, but also to undergraduates and even high school students.
(Tony) It's a very exciting place to work. We work in an area that is constantly changing and developing new applications. We believe in iterative learning, and it's always very exciting to see what the students will come up.
(Martin) It's really cool. We're basically pushing the limits of what can be done with these devices.
(Yahfi) I work in the Biomedical Engineering lab, and it feels like we're standing on the horizon of knowledge.
(Tony) I think Stony Brook students are in demand in the workforce.
(Lauren) I just love the campus itself, the cherry tries, the flowers. It's a nice environment, not only to work in, but also to live. I couldn't be happier.
