Born and raised in Berkeley, CA, Walter studied engineering at U.C. Berkeley. By the age of 30, he had already worked at Lawrence Radiation Lab and was Chief Engineer for one of the first FM radio stations in the Bay Area. He had a distinguished career at Ampex Corp. and Hewlett-Packard as an innovator in audio and video tape recording. He is listed as inventor on more than 30 U.S. and foreign patents and was elected as a Fellow of the IEEE.
