RAYNHAM -- Haley Bergen shielded her eyes from the gruesome, horrible, heart-breaking scene unfolding.
She couldn't bear to watch her fourth-grade teacher, Nick Robichaud, let the class shave his head.

"He looked way better before," said Haley, 10. "It's going to be so weird."

Weird, ugly or stylish — it didn't matter to Robichaud, 25, because he was thrilled his class at LaLiberte Elementary School had read 50,255 pages since February.

If they read at least 35,000 pages, the Bridgewater man had promised to let them shave his head on June 13.

Although another teacher started off by trimming some of Robichaud's thick, brown hair, he let the students take the electric razor to his head.

"We really wanted to shave his head," said Chris Uzzel, 10. "We, like, really wanted to see him like this."

Robichaud, who has been a long-term substitute since teacher Christine Madden left on maternity leave, said he suggested it jokingly, but the kids wouldn't let him back out of it.

"They seem to like situations where I look silly," he added. "It was something they could work toward."

It certainly inspired Madison Rose, 10, to read 203 pages in the past five months.

"(We wanted) to see him shave his head," she said.

"Because it was funny," added Liliana MacMurdo, 10.

Students in the class voted for the shearing over throwing water balloons at their teacher or having an ice-cream party.

"When I was going to college for teaching, we learned food is a low form of reward," Robichaud said.

"Are they going to remember me shaving my head and looking foolish, or are they going to remember some ice-cream party that they got?" he asked. "So, I stuck with this."

Robichaud said he knew in advance it would "not look good," which doesn't bother him — except for the fact he'll be applying for full-time teaching jobs this summer.

"Either it'll be a good conversation starter, or they'll just look at me and wonder why the heck did I shave my head," he said.
