The only part of this I saw as abuse is the fact they rolled the ball. This could very well have made the kitten sick and I'm quite sure being moved around like that at someone else's will was pretty scary for the kitten. Just closing the lid -for a few seconds- is definitely not abuse.

My brother's friend put our cat in a vase, with her head sticking out. She started purring and when we tipped it over to let her out, she wouldn't get out lol
Cats often like small enclosed spaces. Sure, she may not have liked thhe top being on, but she definitely willingly went in the ball and most likely enjoyed it.
