A United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket carrying a payload for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) successfully lifted off Jan. 20, 2011 from Space Launch Complex-6 at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California at 1:10 p.m. PST.
The Delta IV Heavy, at 235 feet or approximately 23 stories tall, is the largest rocket ever to launch from the West Coast of the United States. The mission is in support of national defense.

The closest you can get is surf beach. These rockets are great, spent 3 years prepping for this one on the pad, and finally she left her nest. Blood, sweat and tears.

Wow. Just bought a HD video camera, I'm wondering if this kind of line-of-sight access is available to the general public. Particularly the shots that seem to be from inside a gully or ravine. Anyone know how close you're allowed to get to one of these lunches?

@collectspace true that does happen but its not the purpose for the foam, its the the foam on the Shuttle ET it's main job is to keep the propellant / oxidizer at liquid temperatures. The fire resistance is a bonus.

@MrMic1146 During climbout, free hydrogen continues to attach itself to the vehicle, where it burns on insulation designed for that purpose. So while the fire is inconsequential, parts of the vehicle remain ablaze until ascent into thinner air. (adapted from a 2005 Aviation Week article).
