It is well with my soul- CVHS - Quartet -Marla, Heidi, Meghan & Jessica

Written by: Horatio G. Spafford, 1873.

This hymn was written after several traumatic events in Spafford's life. The first was the death of his only son in 1871, shortly followed by the great Chicago Fire which ruined him financially (he had been a successful lawyer). Then in 1873, he had planned to travel to Europe with his family on the S.S. Ville Du Havre, but sent the family ahead while he was delayed on business. While crossing the Atlantic, the ship sank rapidly after a collision with another ship, and all four of Spafford's daughters died. His wife Anna survived and sent him the now famous telegram, "Saved alone." Shortly afterwards, as Spafford traveled to meet his grieving wife, he was inspired to write these words as his ship passed near where his daughters had died.

Music: Ville du Havre, Philip P. Bliss, 1876. The tune is named after the ship on which Spafford's children perished, the S.S. Ville de Havre.

  • Two years ago my neice was killed in a car accident. This hymn was performed by her college sisters at her school memorial. This performance reminds me. It wasn't until I returned home and Googled it that I realized the underlying message bing given to our family. It was written by a man who knew and experienced the same pain.

  • Beautifully done ladies!

  • Good job, although just a little choppy. Probably nerves. End of phrase chords should be held longer to give better flow and continuity to the piece. I sing in a barbershop quartet and we do this song. Great story behind the writing of the words.

  • Excelent!

  • @angusbonscott (cont'd from before), and she sent him the message as soon as she could - just the words "saved alone". Alone and desolate, Mr. Spafford wrote these words as he poured out his heart to Christ. Later, Phillip Bliss set them to music, to give us what is my favorite of all the many hymns we love. You can read the story in the video description as well - I just thought I share it again, just in case someone decides not to read that. God bless you all! By the way, girls, excellent job!

  • @angusbonscott: Yeah. His name was Horatio Spafford. He lived around the time of the Great Chicago Fire. Just before it happened, he was one of the richest men in the US. His wife and four daughters were off somewhere when the fire started and destroyed basically his entire estate. Then, while he was cleaning up, the ship his family was returning on, the "Ville de Havre" (I think that's how you spell it) collided with another and sank. His wife was the only survivor from his family(out of space)

  • Good!

  • Bravo!

  • Amazing job ladies!!!!

  • i heard the man behind this hymn started out at the top in wall street, and he lost it all including his family in a boat accident. yet, through his faith he stayed in one piece.
