Made at the height of the Cold War, this Navy film provides an overview of the Navy's strategic undersea capabilities, with a focus on nuclear deterrence. Features footage of the nuclear powered USS Sturgeon (SSN-637), USS Skate (SSN-578) surfacing at the North Pole, the USS Triton (SSRN-586) circumnavigating the world underwater, the USS Nautilus (SSN-571), the Sturgeon class USS Parche (SSN-683), USS Skipjack (SSN-585), and the diesel powered USS Albacore (AGSS-569), USS Mang (SS-385). The film also shows the launch of SUBROC (UUM-44), an anti-submarine rocket similar to a cruise missile that can be fired through a torpedo tube. Also featured are shots of a Soviet K-class submarine. The USS George Washington (SSBN-598) the nation's first Polaris nuclear missile submarine is also shown, along with the USS Thomas Edison (SSBN-610). The film also features animation to illustrate how the Polaris A-1 missile has been modified in the A-2 and A-3 variants, to have increasingly long range. The new Poseidon missile is also shown. Various submersibles are shown, including the diesel powered Dolphin (AGS-555), the nuclear powered NR-1 (also known as Nerwin), the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center's Autec I (later known as Sea Cliff DSV-4) and Autec II (also known as the Turtle DSV-3), along with the DSRV-1 (Mystic) and DSRV-2 (Avalon) deep submergence rescue vehicles which would be used to evacuate a crew from a stricken boat.

    USA

    Britain

    France

    India

P.S. Communist China claims that she has nuclear submarines are false. Cautious analysis of Chinese data indicates beyond doubt that they have no such submarines.

  • North Korea: Who Sank the Cheonan?

The sinking of the US submarine was not reported...

Many US atomic submarines have more than 100 crew members. They operate the submarine by night and day shifts, so the crew is large. If a US submarine sank under the third buoy, there could have been many victims, their number comparable to those who died in the Cheonan incident. An American submarine sinking near the third buoy may change into fact given enough time.

  • Surprised be no mention of the following: Hyman Richter, Dennis Wilkerson, William R. Anderson, USS Skate and USS Seawolf. Thanks for uploading!
