Well, I was happy to have gotten a VHD player this week (they were only sold in Japan) but after having just watched the first side of a disc it seems the loading mechanism has malfunctioned and I can't fix it! If anyone knows how to fix these players PLEASE send me a message- the model is Victor HD-9500. I would be willing to ship it to Japan for repair if that's the only way it can be fixed, or buy another working machine from there.

For those who don't know what this is: It's a 3rd videodisc format sold in Japan from 1983 to about the early 1990s. It is very similar to CED- the discs come in plastic caddies inserted into the player and the disc is read with a stylus. The discs are only 10 inches however and have no grooves, and the stylus is flat.

  • Still trying to get this machine fixed! If you're at least in the US and know how to fix these, PLEASE contact me! The problem seems to be with the 'bar' that slides from the back to the front when loading/unloading.

  • @eyeh8nbc: did you ever get this fixed? I just ordered my first VHD from ebay. I still need a player though. I've fixed CED players many times.

  • @databits Did you buy that one that was a ridiculous amount of money? ;) I would've jumped on that if I could get away without paying rent for a month. My player is still not working, I'm afraid to mess with it anymore for fear of wrecking it further. Still hoping to find someone nearby who can look at it for not too much money!

  • Can you show a vid of the loading mechanism?

  • I don't have a camera but I'll try to borrow one. It has this odd 'bar' that goes around the disc caddy- it stays at the front of the player, then when the caddy goes it, it grabs it and moves on a track to the back of the player, then pushes the empty caddy out. It must have moved into a wrong position after playing the disc, since I could not get the disc out (and ended up scratching it with the caddy going in wrong) and now won't load properly at all.

  • Someone more mechanically inclined in the US may be able to fix this without knowing much about the player, if you think you might be and are near Sacramento CA let me know!

  • What year?

  • @eyeh8nbc: you mean the 3D one? Nah, I just bought a disc. I still need a player. Good luck with the fix!

  • @flatblackstrat VHD's video quality was quite good - while the format used a buried-subcarrier similar to CED, VHD had a sharper picture with better color quality and less noise and drop-outs. And unlike the CED VideoDisc, VHD never suffered from skipping - the flat disc/stylus and electro-tracking really worked well. The 3D was true field-sequential 3D and gave superb effects. It was a great format. It's too bad VHD was never released here in the USA.

  • How was the video quality on the this, is it true 3d or just a mild attempt at it.

  • @eyeh8nbc

I'd like to volunteer as I do have experience repairing VCRs, CED and LD players.

Unfortunately, I'm on the East Coast, so that may present a challenge.
