Here is a comparison between the EHX Big Muff Pi with the wicker switch and an Analogman Sun Face NKT 275 with sundial. I tried to get a setting on both that produced as close of a sound as possible. The guitar was a 1957 Reissue Gibson Les Paul and the amp was a Vox AC15CC.

The Big Muff Pie had the volume set at 12 O'clock, tone at about 9 O'clock, sustain at about 10 O'clock and the tone and wicker switches on. The Sun Face had the volume switch at about 1 O'clock and the gain control at about 10 O'clock. With the settings as they were the Les Paul was all the way to 10 for the Sun Face while it was only on 3 for the Big Muff Pi and they were outputting about the same decibel levels. When using the Sun Face, if the volume on the guitar went below 7, there was virtually no difference in the sound compared to the bypass signal. However, with the Big Muff Pie I had to bring the guitar down to 3 to get the same sound and it just got crunchier from there as you turned the volume up.

Normal disclaimer: Forgive the playing, I'm just starting out. Someday I'll be able to remove the disclaimer.

  • The video audio was done in a guitar shop with the typical noise you find in a guitar shop (i.e. other people playing). So you can hear that in the background. Primarily on the Sun Face.

  • Don't hesitate with the sunface... It's an amazing pedal. I think it's the recording that's a little weird on this one.

The amp is also important, but I run mine through a Vox AC4, so there shouldn't be that much difference in tonality, yet mine is completely different.

I just read in the description that the sun face fuzz knob was only 10 o clock. I think that's it. The guy who makes them recommends between 3'o clock and cranked. Then adjust gain by rolling off guitar volume.

  • haha, try the other demos man. the sunface wasn't set up properly. fuzz all the way my friend. you're robbing the pedal of its magic.

  • I was gonna buy an Analogman Sun Face but after hearing this review, no way. The NKT275 Sun Face sounded utterly terrible.
