  • yeah this is where trick or treat originates from. It was a tradition during Halloween where people would leave cake's for the dead souls so that they wouldn't be bothered by them. But the soul's never came to eat them so the poor would ask for these soul cakes in return they would pray for these soul's not to bother anyone!

  • @Draca3 souling is what poor people did to beg in October November when Winter was coming-on... round All souls day... Nov 1st or Halloween... they would go to door to door in the Village... begging for the cakes... in return for promises to pray for those of the house they were begging at ...that had departed... soundz pretty close like Halloween to me not Witchery.....lol

  • Early Christian traditions of the soul cake are the beginnings of our trick or treating. "I will pray for the souls your loved ancestor if you give me a cake". Organist Kristen Lawrence researched and recorded two versions of the old English folk tune, "Souling Song"... one from the viewpoint of the Christian with church bells and the other from the viewpoint of the dead person with a more Samhain drum beat. Both good. Look on YouTube or iTunes for her music.

  • love this song

  • wrong on part of that... a lot of trick or treat actually traces back to practices of witchcraft... so even ho you are right partially... not fully. just to clarify that's all tho...

  • Thanks for this info, friend...

  • Some of the Celtic traditions probably melted into the Catholic concept of purgatory. In purgatory the souls who are on their way to heaven rid themselves of any faults such as jealousy and are transformed into beings worthy to appear before the presence of God. Catholics believe that you can pray for your dead loved ones and the deceased still love and pray for us. So from a Catholic's perception, it makes sense to pray for those who have passed on.

I hope that made sense. :)

  • ah k very interesting.
