In April 2002, Steamrail ran a weekend tour to Panitya and Mildura. At the time, it was thought that this would be the last opportunity to travel along the Mildura line prior to gauge conversion. However, the conversion of the line to standard gauge never occurred.
I chased the tour back from just north of Birchip on Sunday 28/4/2002. The video opens with R711 and T395 stabled at Donald. I then headed north to Birchip to get a shot of R761 arriving with the empty sleeping cars before chasing D3 639 back from Curyo to Donald. At Donald, the train was combined and was hauled back to Melbourne by R761, R711, T356 and T364. D3 639 was transferred back to Melbourne later that week.

awesome So line was never regauged to Standard? Well I'd think a cheaper way would be to put in a 3rd rail for Standard Gauge

At about the 2:45 mark one can hear the sound of silly people driving their cars over the crossing, even though a train is close.
But the best bit comes after that, because the photographer kept pace with the loco on a parallel road. Most train videos have only shots of trains either approaching or departing (which are fine), but this one is special and exciting. Thank you, it's great.
