Tape-o-tron

A monophonic MIDI keyboard-controlled cassette player with the following features: * 17 semitone range * Potentiometer for sweeping up and down the motor speed smoothly * Pitch-bends control the motor speed * LFO that is mapped to motor speed delta values * LFO includes user-controllable depth and speed * Mute switch remembers the last motor speed value pre-mute

It sounds quite okay (dependent on source material).

it is sending MIDI data to a computer, then the computer is sending serial data to the Arduino. This data is converted to a PWM wave that controls the motor via a ULN2803.

I had this same idea a little while ago - but my plan was to use only hardware. I think I am going to end up making a step sequencer to control the voltage instead of keys - I have a feeling it will be difficult to tune it so each key is one semitone apart no matter what the source sound is on the tape. The step sequencer will use a pot at each step instead. I'll set it up so the timing signal can come from a midi source or a local clock.

You've ALMOST got me interested in MIDI again. I've been dead-set ag'in it since around '91 - for myself, mind you. Best left to Laurie Anderson, i thought. But this...maybe with a quadreverb in place of the tape machine..
