Recorded at the 2011 "A-Ha!" NH Social Media Business Summit, this visionary information is presented by Walter Elly, consultant with V2 Strategic Advisors; former senior director of emerging technology at MicroArts Creative Agency; Co-director of Foursquare Day and co-founder of Portsmouth Foursquare.

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:

So, what is "strange?" Turns out it's all relative. For example, shopping online - ex. Amazon.com, a social site in its own right - is no longer strange, but certainly was a decade ago. Sharing photos, watching videos online, certainly not strange anymore.

Social networking is the #1 time-spent activity online. In fact, Facebook has 800+ million users. These days, it's strange NOT to be on Facebook. That's the point. Because of that, some opportunities to go into social media that didn't exist before are now becoming mainstream.

Which begs the question: What's next? What else is becoming NOT so strange?

- Sharing your every thought on Twitter
- Biz networking on LinkedIn BEFORE connecting in person
- Online, location-based coupons, a la Groupon
- Biz recommendations for brick-n-mortar stores, a la Yelp
- Listening to music socially, a la Spotify
- Raising money socially, a la Kickstarter
- Asking questions online socially, a la Quora
- Finding a cab using social networking, a la UberU

What does it all mean?

More and more time is being spent on and with social media - more resources, respect, attention, action. If you're not there, you're not being seen, and sooner or later, you're simply not going to be relevant to you clients, customers, network, and/or audience.

Two really strange but valuable things:

1) Foursquare - a leading location-based service and social application

2) Chatter - social collaboration within the enterprise space

FOURSQUARE
Only 4% of US adults have actually checked in somewhere on Foursquare (1 in 10 Smartphone owners), so doing so is officially "strange" right now.

Still, there are some really interesting marketing opportunities. When you check-in on Foursquare, you can opt to link it to your Facebook and Twitter accounts, so your whole network knows. Hopefully, the biz, place, event, or organization you're checking into is paying attention, so it can ENGAGE in real-time!

You can see a list of where your Friends are. You can see a map of the area.
Tips and recommendations are easily shared and offered. Smart businesses offer discounts and incentives to those who check in.

When people check in, visibility and impressions can be amplified quickly and effortlessly, which translates to FREE ADVERTISING.

You can learn how to take advantage of Foursquare for your biz at Foursquare.com/business. It's free for businesses, too.

There's a book called "Location-Based Marketing for Dummies" that Walter recommends as "pretty awesome."

CHATTER

When you go to work, most folks are stuck "inside the box," and not able to access social tools and benefits within their workplace.

The thing is, many of our habits and actions on social channels are becoming ingrained in our minds and preferences, so professionals are wanting to share their input the workplace with the same effortlessness and convenience as they do on social sites like Facebook, Amazon, etc.

Which leads to the concept of THE SOCIAL ENTERPRISE

Chatter is like a secure and private Facebook for your internal business processes.

Remember before email, there were those manilla inter-office envelopes? And then there's business email, which is awesome, right? NOT!!!

Chatter is the next evolutionary efficiency and collaboration tool.

This tool is already demonstrating notable returns, like 30% less email and fewer time-wasting meetings.

Best part: Chatter is a FREE tool.

QUESTIONS FOR WALTER:

Q: Why Chatter vs. Yammer?

Yammer is another good one, but it doesn't yet have the integrations into things like CRM. Chatter has a scalable architecture, as it was developed as part of the SalesForce.com platform, so it really becomes part of the sales system of the whole company.

Q: Can you share a stripped-down version of Foursquare for newbies?

Foursquare is an app you can get on your phone that uses your GPS, so it can see what businesses are around you, and you can see which of your friends are around you, too. When you check in, you can share with your network, so they know where you are and what you're up to.

When businesses encourage checkins with deals, incentives, etc., they get more eyeballs, engagement, social proof, and free advertising.
