This was the first film adaptation of Richard Matheson's I AM LEGEND, a scientifically rationalized vampire novel. (Matheson was displeased with the film, and had his pen name affixed to the credits!) George Romero aknowledged the novel's influence.
THE OMEGA MAN and Will Smith's film both eschew the vampire theme, and this weakened both, in the latter case forcing the scriptwriter to devise a pathetic explanation of the title. To bad, as Will gave a very good performance in it.

This was released in 1964. Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" was released in 1968. Maybe Romero's film wasn't as "original" as one might think. Vincent Price is the greatest! A true Actor's Actor!!

Only saw this movie for the first time a couple nights ago. I loved it! I grew up with "The Omega Man," but now I like this one even more. Vincent Price gave a subtle everyman performance and was terrific.
