Saturday Night Live takes on Blagojevich - Disgraced Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich made easy fodder for Saturday Night Live (SNL) this week, with a great skit where Blagojevich offers to appoint a candidate approved by the Legislature if the U.S. Senate gave him a lump sum and pays off his credit cards.
Keeping in true Blagojevich style, the first word out of the mouth of the Governor, played by Jason Sudeikis, was a swear word, with many following.
Rod Blagojevichs wife Patti Blagojevich gets a run as well, with her character storming in with expletives to demand her husband get her a seat on NASAs board. You promised! she whines. If you were wondering how NBC's "Saturday Night Live" was going to take down Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who became a national joke this week with his arrest by federal agents on corruption charges, the answer came in the show's cold open.
Blago, as portrayed by Jason Sudeikis, a veteran of Chicago's improv scene, morphed into a David Mamet character, a foul-mouthed con man with a quasi-Chicago accent.
Obviously, it was a caricature. The real Blagojevich doesn't have a quasi-Chicago accent.
When the actual governor is on tape, swearing up a storm as he seems to be putting President-elect Barack Obama's former U.S. Senate seat up for auction, it almost dared "SNL" to try to come up with something more over-the-top.
So Sudeikis' Blagojevich was trying to squeeze kickbacks out of a Senate committee and offering to sell them Abraham Lincoln's wedding ring (and skeletal hand) while Patti Blagojevich, Kristen Wiig playing Bonnie to Sudeikis' Clyde, sought a job with NASA.
Sen. Elizabeth Dole (Casey Wilson) called Blagojevich a disgrace to Illinois, then reconsidered: "Well, maybe not to Illinois, but if you were a governor of any other state, you would be a disgrace to that state."
The "SNL" newscast parody "Weekend Update" stuck mostly to the territory already covered in a week's worth of late-night comedy programs such as hair, wiretaps, corruption and stupidity. Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler, also Chicago improv alums, did manage a little top-spin on the material in what apparently will be their last "Really" bit, since Poehler subsequently announced this will be her final "SNL" as a cast member.
"You should resign," Meyers advised Blago. "Even Illinois politicians are saying you should resign, and when Illinois politicians think you're too corrupt, you're too corrupt. That's like Amy Winehouse telling you to go to rehab. Really."
Of Blagojevich's hair, Poehler cracked: "It looks like you're wearing a toupee that's also wearing a toupee."
It was less funny than intriguing as a reflection of what America makes of the Blagojevich mess and the city and state from which it came.
lol, now i want to play whack-a-rod.
