Jon Hogan and Maria Moss perform "Country Blues," a song recorded by Dock Boggs in 1927, and released on both the Brunswick and Lonesome Ace record labels.
Dock, (Born Morgan Lee Boggs, Feb. 7th, 1898), had worked in the coal mines around Norton, Virginia from the age of 12, had traveled all the way to New York City to record with Brunswick, after passing a 1926 audition that the later famous A.P. Carter failed.
The Great Depression forced Dock to give up on his music career, as he was unable to find anyone in his hometown of Norton, Virginia who could pay his train fare to attend the Victor Records audition of 1930.
Returning to the coal mines, Dock gave up both the banjo and strong drink at his wife's instance, until his retirement from the mines in 1958. Discovered by Mike Seeger in 1963, Dock enjoyed another short-lived moment in the spotlight, including the opportunity to play at the Newport Folk Festival in 1964, sharing the bill with the likes of Bob Dylan and Mississippi John Hurt.
Health problems brought his career as a musician to a close in 1968.
Dock Boggs died on his birthday in 1971, age 73.
Thanks to Dan Follette at DFI Arts for lovingly restoring this vintage footage, circa 2010

  • Monroeville, a group of young musicians, does a more melodic version of this song that I like much better; but this version is good, considering that it is the original. This is just too monotone and a bit too fast for my taste; but, then again, we all bring our on preferences to the table where music is concerned.

  • Damn, I like it. I like how different it is from the original (Not that I don't love that one too)

I do this song alone and can't get that cool ambiance you have in this version. 5/5

  • Brilliant!
