Russell Shorto is the author of Descartes Bones: a Skeletal History of the Conflict Between Faith and Reason. After the fundamentalisms of the Bush era, Mr. Shorto argues that people are implicitly looking for a version of the enlightenment which looks to reason and evidence as the basis for knowledge and, in addition, makes allowance for the emotions as well. This open-ended enlightenment is the one which formed the foundation of the American Revolution and American Democracy.
