Catamaran-Dogamaran starring CHLOE (the neighbour's dog) with John Ahern on Hobie16 'Kinsale Regatta' at Seacliff South Australia April 2009. Filmed by Geoff Gray - 'Felix'. Hang on for the 'slow-mo' finish when the wind picks up!

  • Not all dogs can swim. Mine is a husky/Irishwolfhoud cross. Hates water and can't swim. Tried putting PDF on when kayaking or close to water to get used to it but no such luck. Will keep perservering.

  • Hey Joe! I have taught some really scared dogs to swim - even Chloe when she was 4 y/o and had never been to the beach. Throwing a ball in the shallows is a good trick and over a few days he'll venture further in. Chloe even failed there so I took her in in my arms, walking slowly and then lowering her in gently allowing her to swim to shore. This may have to be repeated many time and at the dogs own pace with lots of stroking and PRAISE. A PDF can be just an added problem for him.

  • looks like fun. your dog needs a pfd

  • BUT....dogs survive in the water better than humans and can swim further and faster without a pfd.

  • your dog should still have one. what if you pitchpoled with the dog onboard and it catapulted into the mast and got knocked oout. Ive seen it happen to a person

  • I understand your concern but a much greater danger is the dog being taken by a shark while trying to swim to shore with a PFD (life jacket) slowing her down. Maybe I should leave her home - maybe I should stay home too, safer to die in bed!

Chloe is made up of various 'bits' and has the head of a Staffordshire - VERY HARD. Besides, when you sail every day you don't pitchpole - not after the first year anyway.

  • She looks like she's having a blast. Question: Did she instinctively know where to move to help balance the boat or did you have to teach her?
