An empire grows, gets too big, and then falls. The US is overdue for that. If there is any correlation with religious attitudes, it's hard to say if it's causal. It may just be that religion is more compatible with the western breed of the mentality of conquest and empire building (baptise the indigenous and then start the plunder), prosperous people start to forget religion, and then after their empire falls they come to their senses and any beliefs in the supernatural is more of a hobby.
