Barbara Cook nearing her eighties now I think... is still considered a singer's singer! Her presence on stage even nowadays is mesmerizing. She had the whole of the Sydney Opera House audience feeling breathless in wonder!

Chenoweth's rendition is not a VAI product although I am sure it is quite lovely. The VAIMUSIC channel is exclusively for items published by VAI or distributed by them in the United States.

I don't think it's necessary to criticize any of the four versions here! They're just different interpretations of the same song and all are entertaining!

Just one of several movie roles that rightly should have gone to Barbara, but went to the terminally vanilla Shirley Jones. I mean, really, three for three. Shirley was/is many things, but she's not one who transcends material and/or genre. Barbara was that. I can't get enough of her actually ACTING this song to a Bell Hour chorus boy, after God-knows how many performances she'd already given opposite Robert Preston. Such a pro.

I love Kristin Chenoweth, but this song BELONGS to Barbara Cook. And Barbara did this song in the original Broadway production of the Music Man in 1959. The Beatles did a cover of the song a few years later. Barbara is the first to sing it and the best to sing it.

The song was written for the musical. The Beatles did a COVER of it. Don't get me wrong, I love the Beatles, but this song was originally from the Music Man. Before you accuse someone of "ripping off" a song, get your facts straight.

Highly recommended: "Opening Night on Broadway" by Steven Suskin - "The Music Man" is on pp. 460-464.
