Listen to this interpretation of Rosina's "Una voce poco fa" (as well as it is in German)from Rossini's "Il Barbiere di Siviglia". IMO beautifully sung by the German coloratura Frieda Hempel.
I suppose you're referring to Rossini's comment to Adelina Patti after she sang this aria with excessive embellishments. You're right, it is overdone. Still, Hempel ornaments with grace and agility, and despite everything she adds, there is interpretive artistry as well. Next to Galli-Curci's acoustic version of the aria, Hempel's--together with those of Tetrazzini, Ivogun, Callas, and Moffo--are my favorite versions.
