The annual Fargo Street Hill Climb in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles is a unique event that pits cyclists against one of the steepest streets in the city. I recorded my first of two failed attempts at the 2006 event and plan to come back in March of 2007 and do it until I get to the top.

  • I did this in 1976 with A ROAD BIKE AND A 42X21 GEAR. I think that is one of the hardest gears ever to the top.

  • @arklat 42/21! That's awesome!

  • The Tour of California needs to have a stage end here.

Cool video. Got further than I could, that's 4 sure.

  • Thanks CV. Even worse I tried again in 2007, was doing better only to have the dude in front of me stall out and then not have sense enough to clear out of way. Gah! I passed on attempting this year and last. Maybe next year.

  • Thanks 1Moulton!

  • Also, my friend Kevin Lutz went up in a 42/21 too. So we both used a relatively high gear for that hill. He was riding a Masi, and I had a Colnago Super. I saw all manner of weird attempt bikes. One had a small front wheel, others had chainrings welded onto clusters so it had a huge rear cog. Crazy stuff. And most never were able to do it, even with the specialty stuff. I wanted to take my track bike the next year, but I never did go back to it. I guess it wasn't a challenge anymore.

  • @Thanks, wildbell. I rode out there from Pasadena with some friends. We got there early, and we'd never been there before, and nobody was there yet. I went part-way up to check it out, and my shifters started to slip the chain down the cluster, so I turned around an went to the bottom. We weren't sure if we even had the right place. Then, some folks showed up to set up for the event. I tightened the shifter screw as tight as I could, and up I went. straight up, no switching.

  • We used to sit on the hill at night in the middle of the street & drink Mickeys with the Abads, watching the world go by, and wondering who lived in the big house on the hill across the way.

  • Hey, cool vid! That's in my 'hood! You've met me, I'm the guy that made the La Noche shirt design.

  • Cool video, nice try!
