James Kalm checks in to view the curatorial efforts of Maureen Cavanaugh. "Admirer" is a selection of some of today's most recognized young artists, with a special attention to recent developments in figurative painting from the classic rendering of Ridley Howard and Alex Katz, to the eccentric psychedelic pastiches of Erik Parker. Maureen has included some of the best current abstractionists like Torben Glehler, Brad Kahlhamer and Kristin Baker. Also featured are Claudine Anrather, Kyle Simon, Lauren Luloff, Carolyn Salas et al.
openings are not so prescribed....melting snow?....BW should know!......it's not fluffing up a roster, it's people just out, doing different things, being people. the grand scheme is too abstract for the moment, new york is stressful! art is always better after the opening, critics always go when no one is there.just my opinion:)

31 Grand has a narrow several room space that lends itself to bottlenecks during openings. But they allow photography and are friendly, open gallerists so the gallery and their shows are definately about the work. If their openings are crowded and festive it's just a sign that artists (the majority of the crowd) feel comfortable there. It's an artists' gallery.

Next time James shows up we'll make sure he catches us facing the walls. I surely never said it wasn't about seeing the work. I saw the work and got to discuss it with some of the artists involved and toasted the curator with a glass of wine and plan on going back yet again when it isn't packed and taking it in yet again. This video is hardly a representation of whether or not the people in attendance were admirers as well was my point (and yes I agree of course plenty were not..)

Thanks for those amazing insights, BW.
Openings are totally all about showing up and seeing the work. As to what else happens at these things, it all adds up to melting snow. The art should be the star, not the artists. If a by-product of my (or someone else's) appearing helps fluff up the party roster, so be it, but it's of little importance in the grand scheme.

cont'd - Openings also serve to celebrate the often herculean task it is to get a group show such as this together -a chance for everyone (and studio-bound artist's like myself (I show with this gallery) to meet the artists in the show along with their peers that attend in support -especially when it is a group show culling from other galleries. there was a thrilling (for me at least) and diverse group of artists in attendance that evening and yes I discussed and even viewed the work.

While he wasn't filming who bothered looking at the work before getting a glass of wine and 'klatching'... actual openings (New York at least) are more than just showing up to see the work. Generally in the midst of a promising show at a packed opening you decide to come back during the month the show is up to have quiet time with the work.

Several pieces looked pro level... (at least to me), but the rest seemed rather crude and amaturish... nobody is looking at the work, just standing there klatching in that rather cramped space... oof! Sorry, maybe it's just my western eyes seeing this vid.

Nice show. So many people there. I second "Imaginaryflower"'s comment. Haha.

openings in new york are more about the people, always....noise and fun and girls and boys...it's a good time....new york is very stressful and openings are vents for some hard working people to make noise!! thanks for this one mr. kalm

James seems to be the only one actually 'admiring'. What a noise!
