Pair of SD80MACs on the coal, and a D940-CW and SD70M-2 on the Intermodal. Trains have just exited the Gallitzin and Alleghany Tunnels on thier way East. • Pretty cool video. Care to share how you found this particular spot? Excellent vantage poiint, but I get the feeling some trespassing was involved.

The helpers don't shove the train down the mountain. If fact, shoving anything downhill is impossible. They help get the train over the mountains by shoving uphill. Once half the train is over the summit, they help by providing braking effort and are actually being pulled the rest of the way.

  • HA I hear what your saying, but I lived on the summit of this mountain and know the local crews. Sounds a bit wierd but they set the brakes at the crest (or summit) and by the time the trains starts rolling it would stall out with out the helpers shoving it all the way down the grade. It sounds a bit wierd but it's how they operate on this mountain. You will hear the crew in the helpers tell the lead unit "They are all against you" meaning they are shoving.

  • The power on the coal train is a pair of 5000 horsepower exConrail SD80MAC's. I love to see 2 trains going the same way, I saw a lot of that up there, if lucky, 3 in one shot. Nice video!

  • @iRECKONER, they definitely weren't shoving...the units were either at or very close to idle, not anwhere near the throttle needed to shove.
