The title says it all...... Kiha52 was made for steep up/down hill lines, they had 2x180ps diesel engines in each. And one had 2 control rooms ( one at each end ), so usually kiha52 was in service at any mountain area where not so many passengers were there. The engine (DMH17 series ) was standard diesel engine for former JNR (Japan National Railways) diesel passenger cars (DMU) . A bit powerless compared to the standard engines nowadays but they needed a steady engine to provide so many diesel passenger cars all around Japan.
