Today's children may be the first generation in memory to have a shorter lifespan than their parents. Can this be true? Is this possible? According the chairman of the United Kingdom's Food Standards Agency—yes. Childhood obesity is a major concern in the United States and Iowa.

Assignment Iowa looks at this growing epidemic. We'll visit with Iowa Senator Tom Harkin about his work with health and wellness, particularly with children. As part of the 2002 farm bill, the senator created the Harkin Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, which offers fresh fruit and vegetable snacks to students. We'll travel to Harding Middle School in Des Moines, where the program is helping staff and students alike make healthier eating choices.
