to answer your question out of context, where an artist is from is one way of gauging how likely one is to see them in concert or to know of their next album. It's a personal proximity thing for some.

A lot of people won't like it but Rush Limbaugh gave this guy's career a huge boost by using the song as his "gay update" theme. The same is true of Clarence "Frogman" Henry and "Ain't Got No Home." It's still a classic.
