I originally found Godman's interpretation of Self Enquiry to be at odds with what appeared to be a more active version of it Ramana seemed to recommend in other writings elsewhere. But after doing it, I have settled into that practice as he describes it. What is interesting is that in Jean Dunn's books of Nisargadatta, it is very obvious that "sitting with the sense of I am" is exactly what he recommended as well. They are on the exact same page and this gave me immense confidence.

Bhagavan was talking about the "feeling" I, you cannot look at it. Whenever you start thinking, get back to the feeling I. What is that feeling? It is just pure being, you are not thinking, you are just aware of whatever is happening around you, you are relaxed. A technique that is equivalent is to bring yourself back to the present moment every time you catch yourself thinking. It's called unfocused awareness, pure relaxation.

@mulkytool i meant to say I, not eye. I'd also like to say that at times i cant find an I thought, but im never sure if it's because its subsided or because i am lacking concentration, i feel as though i might be bringing it back simply by trying to find it. thanks for any advice anyone has :)

ive been using self inquiry and it has brought about incredible changes(although they havent stuck yet, they come and go. I'm curious though, should i be viewing my eye as though im looking at it, or just looking out from it, i do my best to find the I thought but sometimes im looking out from it but i am always in some way also looking at it, then thoughts of dreams ive had or really old memories come in, and i try to find the I thought again but I cant.

@TaterGumfries Yes you do want the false feeling of I to subside, thats the point. obviously the true self can't subside.....

That's a good standard technique... except you don't want the feelin to subside. That's a path to defeat. It should get worse and worse until you snap. Then you got somethin there.
