How exactly did you get the yellow and blue W to "fade" in and out?

You use a Checkerboard from Generated Media as a Child, and then just Pan it, in Event Pan/Crop, behind a transparent Parent letter W.

Yes, I actually got that ^_^. I was more of talking about the effect/transition used. But I think I figured it out. It was Linear Wipe, right?

A Wipe transition may work, but I just Panned the blue & yellow box behind the W.

if you want to add fx to specific part of a video track, do you have to open it in trimmer or can you edit parts of the video directly?

The trimmer window isn't needed. At the end of each clip is an Event FX button to use, although you may have to Split the original clip into smaller clips.
