Damascus Gate, the northern entrance to Jerusalem's Old City, has traditionally been a center of commerce where people from different parts of the city and, before the Israeli occupation, from the West Bank, come to buy products of various kinds.
This custom now appears to be threatened by a new Jerusalem Municipality policy regarding street venders in the area. The Jerusalem municipality decided to review and then renew the licenses of traders, ostensibly to standardize their employment situation. However, in reality this is leading to the revocation of licenses and harassment of traders with threats of fines.
