The economic recovery package passed by Congress included a tax credit for up to $8,000 for first-time homebuyers who purchase a home from January 1, 2009 to November 30, 2009. This credit is based on legislation I authored in the last Congress. Over a million Americans have taken advantage of this incentive to realize the American dream of home ownership.

I firmly believe that home sales spur economic growth. That is why I am a cosponsor of Senator Benjamin Cardin's (D-Maryland) legislation (S.1678) that would extend the first-time homebuyer tax credit until June 1, 2010. This bill is currently pending before the Senate Finance Committee. You can count on my continued support should this legislation come before me for a vote.

If you believe that you qualify for a first time-time homebuyer tax credit, I recommend that you visit the IRS website (www.irs.gov) for more information.

Thank you again for contacting me. Please continue to keep me informed about issues of concern to you and your family.

Sincerely,

Debbie Stabenow

United States Senator
