I was hanging around the house today and noticed a hawk (I think; I'm sure there'll be some comments about what kind of bird it is) sitting on the deck railing. I think this is the same kind of bird my family and I sometimes see flying around the valley looking for food. I hoped I'd be able to get closer and take some pictures and video, and to my delight, I was able to. I kept taking pictures as I got closer but even when I was right up against the door window he/she didn't fly away. Amazing bird isn't he/she? And it's so cool how some birds can turn their heads all the way around like that. There are a lot of beautiful birds around where I live, but this little guy was beautiful and adorable. I love his/her eyes.
My house has gotten to be a popular bird spot. We have at least four feeders, and the other day there were probably thirty bluebirds flying around. I also see magpies, chickadees, sparrows, blue jays, crows, owls (rarely seen). My favorite ones to watch, and the ones whose name I just learned, are house finches (females have brown feathers and males have brown wings with red head, chest, and back).
I was talking to Lucky, my family's dog, in the video. Lucky went to the window after I stopped filming and the hawk flew away.
looks like a cooper's hawk. he/she is hanging out by the feeder waiting for a little bird to catch...smart!
