I would love to order cocoa DIRECTLY from farmers. But wtf, can't find any address on the net.

I'll be staying in a place near Punta Gorda called Hickatee Cottages. I'd heard nice reviews of it and it looked really nice. Would LOVE to see the Cacao farm! Did you guys rent a car when you were there, and how difficult is that to do?

Then that would a great crop for green houses to add.
I wonder if the climate will change and change the regions where cacao can be grown?
-
Cacao grows (in the rainforest) 10-20 degrees North/South from the equator so it can't grow in the U.S. unless I guess like jehiahl said in a greenhouse. It needs tropical climates & lots of rain & shade.

HI, I'm not sure but I would think a warmer, humid climate. You may have to use a greenhouse in most U.S. states.

Where in the U.S.A. can cacao be grown?
no-- we flew into Belize City then took Maya Air to PG. Cottontree picked us up at the airstrip. We stayed there all week and took daily trips with the lodge. Actually CottonTree has its own cacao farm too and its own chocolate making facility and workshop.

It looks like they're eating chocolate mole for lunch! I'm going to Toledo soon -- very much looking forward to it.

Are you going to be staying at Cotton Tree? If not, I think you can still join their included tours for a fee. I would recommend the cacao/chocolate making and the Blue Creek Cave most.
