I made this video for my Japanese students as a listening exercise, and to show them a little of American school life.

I went home to San Diego, CA last summer, and my niece, Britt, was nice enough to take me over to her high school and give me a little guided tour and let me film her talking about American school life.

So I finally had a class in Japan where I could put that footage to use. I edited it together, added in some title cards and music, and used it last week with my 9th graders at Hamayama Chu.

They enjoyed watching it and had some good questions. I think the text cards went by too fast for most of them to read, and the audio is pretty low or windy at times, but overall it was effective as a teaching tool. I gave all 4 classes a short quiz after we watched and then the JTE (Japanese Teacher of English) and I answered questions and made comments.

Thanks to my sister Lynda and to Britt, who will graduate soon and be off to college in Colorado in the fall.

Enjoy!

  • Guys, most US high schools aren't half as pretty as this. I go to a high school where my Spanish teacher sometimes doesn't even show up for work, we get bomb threats literally EVERY week, the bathrooms always have a thick haze of smoke, and there are occasionally race riots.

  • @leach51395 I went to 2 high schools - one in Dallas TX which was a big, concrete block (needed for the heating and A/C needs) and one in Del Mar, CA, which was a wonderful, open campus much like the one is this video. Southern CA schools are very nice, and not particularly the norm for the US as a whole.

  • whats the song at 4:10

  • @Drakka100 Dope Nose by Weezer

  • i totally hate the uk,and i was wondering does anyway know if i can move to america when i am 18? i am 15 atm but i don't know what i would do to get a visa to live in america any help plz?

  • @limeadam I think it's fairly easy for a UK citizen to get a holiday working visa so you can come to the US or Canada and work for a few months - many UK students do it during their gap year. To stay longer, you'd have to apply for a visa, which I think usually involves sponsorship from a company

one day i will live and study in there.

Is there so cool like everyone is saying?

    Hugs from Latvia. :]

  • from what Ive seen California high schools are much different period from other school in the country. ie more freedom to be outside, interact with other students in different grades, just better overall.

but even though my high school wasn't that great, it had the best students in the area, our school was so mellow, whenever we'd get new students form different schools they'd all be surprised of how chill it was <3
