Topic: The Power of the story and the right to tell it.
Speaker: Arnold Zable
Story is one of the most powerful tools for advocates of human rights and social justice. Stories provide a voice to the voiceless and the traumatised. On the World Press Freedom Day, Arnold Zable will speak about the art of story, and the importance for authors be allowed to write them free from the fear of persecution. He will draw upon recent leading cases of persecuted writers worldwide, and will also draw upon tales that come from years of listening to, and recounting, stories told by survivors, refugees, immigrants, victims of war, and citizens from all walks of life. At the heart of story telling lies the art of listening, and the listener comes to understand that it is not only the story but the way it is told that defines its uniqueness.
Biography: Arnold Zable is an acclaimed writer, storyteller, educator and human rights advocate. His books include 'Jewels and Ashes', 'The Fig Tree', and three novels, 'Cafe Scheherazade', 'Scraps of Heaven' and, most recently, 'Sea of Many Returns'. Zable is the author of numerous articles, columns, stories, essays and several works for theatre. He has conducted writing workshops and talks on creative writing and the art of storytelling throughout Australia, and been a visiting lecturer in Deakin, Melbourne, Monash, RMIT, La Trobe and Victoria Universities. Zable is the President of the Melbourne Centre of International PEN, an organisation which advocates on behalf of persecuted writers. He was recently awarded a doctorate from the School of Creative Arts, Melbourne University.
