First year of dealing with hive beetles and have them in my observation
hive. Have them in 4 bee yards, 2 that are new yards this year. Has
been a bad year for hive buildup in my area, hives are weaker than
normal, so possibly could have had them before but the bees have
managed them better. Whatever the reason, I hadn't seen them before
this year. Wish I hadn't had the opportunity to film this, but here it
is. Now I've got to get busy to control this. Hope to find a successful
way without using toxic chemicals in or around my hives.
Small Hive Beetles are so annoying. They seem to just waste the bees time. I used cd cases with the tabs broken out on the bottom board and above the deeps. The bees trap them in the case. It seemed to keep things under control. I also used some of the beetleblasters.I don't like getting oil near the hives but they worked too. Nice Video! Good Luck!!!!

I don't know anything about beekeeping, but I'd guess they can't gang up and sting them because of the way the beetle's carapace is constructed. Even the underside looks very round and smooth, so the sting probably slides off the same way their jaws are doing. Also I notice the beetles are clamping down on the glass, making them even harder to grip.
Stupid beetles and their clever carapaces. >:I
