I would recommend putting a wet towel under the mixing bowl while tempering the eggs. And straining the custard mixture before pouring it into the measuring cup/ramekins. If there are bubbles, lightly run the torch over them. Also, the hot water can be poured in right at the oven rather than on the counter because it gets heavy and unwieldy.
