Film Description: "If you build it, he will come." That's the ethereal message that inspires Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) to construct a baseball diamond in the middle of his cornfield. At first, "he" seems to be the ghost of disgraced ballplayer Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta), who materializes on the ballfield and plays a few games with the awestruck Ray. But as the weeks go by, Ray receives several other messages from a disembodied voice, one of which is "Ease his pain." He realizes that his ballfield has been divinely ordained to give a second chance to people who have sacrificed certain valuable aspects of their lives. One of these folks is Salingeresque writer Terence Mann (James Earl Jones), whom Ray kidnaps and takes to a ball game and then to his farm. Another is Doc Graham (Burt Lancaster), a beloved general practitioner who gave up a burgeoning baseball career in favor of medicine. The final "second-chancer" turns out to be much closer to Ray. That "magical" field in Dyersville, Iowa still draws thousands of baseball-happy tourists each year.

I hardly ever cry during a movie. For some reason, this scene gets me wet-eyed every time.

That's why I go to movies. To pretend for a little while that the world is better than it is.

Well this movie came out in 1988 I believe, and even in the movie Kevin Costner bemoans how "the game" isn't what it used to be. So I'm not sure if there ever really was a pure time for baseball, this movie plays with the fantasy and myth of the wholesome All-American quality of baseball. I don't think anything like that ever existed. But it's nice to pretend like it once did.

what ever happened to baseball? when i was a young kid i would go to games and there was a sense of awe and simplicity about the game. Today, it seems the "game" and sense of awe and wonder is gone. Movies like this bring back a time of wonder, awe, that the game of baseball brings together us all.

I think also that casting an actor of almost angelic beauty to play John was inspired. We all remember those we love as perfect. John is almost otherwordly in his features. Obviously of the life to come.

(;O;) I am the favorite movie. Because it would not even be my Japanese, I wish Americans would be crying.
