Sad scottish song about the last pitched battle by the brave Scots armed with pike, sword, and targe against a modern British army equipped with cannon and musket at the Battle of Culloden.

The following is from Answers.com
Culloden, battle of (1746). Fought on 16 April on Drummossie moor near Inverness, the battle marked the culmination of the Jacobite uprising of 1745. It was fought by armies headed by the Duke of Cumberland on the Hanoverian side and Charles Edward Stuart, Bonnie Prince Charlie, or the Young Pretender on the other. The Hanoverians numbered about 9, 000 and the Jacobites about 5, 000. Contrary to myth the 9, 000 were neither all English nor the 5, 000 all Scots. There were Scots troops with Cumberland and some French soldiers in the prince's army. The rebels were not only outnumbered but outclassed in weapons, being themselves heavily dependent upon broadswords and shields while their enemies had muskets and bayonets and above all artillery. They also gave battle on ground totally unsuited to their most effective tactic, the Highlander charge. Cumberland's artillery soon reduced the moor to a killing field. The Jacobites stood the fire for some time before charging, being decimated by grape and musket shot. Although their right wing reached the front line of the Hanoverian army they were forced to retreat. Charles fled the field and eventually escaped to France. Some 2, 000 Jacobites were slain compared with only about 300 casualties on the Hanoverian side. It was a decisive battle, ending all prospects of a Stuart restoration.

  • a haunting song, a truly sad day in Scottish History.....thank you for such a great rendering of this lament.....

  • I've been wanting to hear a good rendering of this song. Thanks!

  • You might like to see Alastair McDonald's own performance of "Culloden's Harvest", which he wrote, and indeed he is very much alive & still performing regularly around Scotland. (The song has a very hauntingly "traditional" feel to it, but actually Alastair wrote it.) Alastair's performance of his "Culloden's Harvest", along with some other terrific songs performed by Alastair, can be viewed via my favourites or through Treblestring & Camfind channels. ENJOY! (He's a great guitarist too.)

  • So sad and so beautiful :(

  • amazing no comment think this is the best song ever in every genre

  • Their cannons were vastly inferior and less frequent but they did still have a couple (alls fair in love and war I suppose). Anyway I am Scottish so I'm not really trying to argue either way particularly as it was practically a civil battle (if there is such a thing).
